How to Become a Member of Parliament

Member of the National Assembly

The Constitution of Zimbabwe provides for the election of 360 Members of Parliament. Parliament consists of the Senate and the National Assembly with 80 and 280 Members respectively. Members perform legislative, representative and oversight functions for a 5-year term.

Qualifications

  • Must be a registered voter
  • Must be at least 21 years of age

Disqualifications

  • Disqualified as a voter
  • Vacated a parliamentary seat within 5 years due to conviction
  • Current Member of Parliament (for by-elections)

Senator

A Senator is a person elected to the Senate in terms of the law. Senators serve alongside Members of the National Assembly to form the bicameral Parliament of Zimbabwe.

Qualifications

  • Must be a registered voter
  • Must be at least 40 years of age
  • OR holds the office of Chief
  • OR is a person with a disability as defined in electoral law

Disqualifications

  • Disqualified for voter registration
  • Vacated a parliamentary seat within 5 years due to conviction
  • Current Member of Parliament (for by-elections)
